Engagement Session

Yesterday was Vinh & I's engagement session with John from SimplyTwo Photography. We probably had the most memorable engagement session in SimplyTwo history to date!

We started off by picking up our wonderful photographer from the San Jose Airport. We made a quick Starbucks run before heading to Pebble Beach. As we arrived there, we found out there was a golf tournament & that Pebble Beach was closed. To our surprise, we somehow found our way into the 17-mile scenic drive to do our engagement session anyhow. To our surprise, we were the first engagement session for 2012, yay! John made us feel super comfortable being in front of the camera & he'd direct us in poses once & a while, but the majority was natural.

After finishing up at the lodge, we drove to our next destination. We decided to stop & build a stone tower for fun. Briefly after we finished building our tower, Vinh & I looked up at this huge wave come at us & it literally went up to my knees! I looked up to see that John had ninja'd to higher ground & that the receding wave had completely tore our stone tower apart. I look up towards higher ground to see that John was frantically saving his drenched equipment bag & my heart just sank. Vinh & I basically assisted him in emptying out his bag & looking for his lost cell phone. As Vinh was walking around trying to call John's phone, another wave came & it went up to his chest as well as killing his cell phone in the process. We spent a good 30-45 minutes trying to dry John's equipment & looking for his cell phone. Sadly, the ocean claimed his cell phone. We told John we'd help pay for part of his loss because we felt so bad that it happened. For obvious reasons, we had to end our session. I helped cover Vinh up as he changed his clothing since he was soaked ("I could've gone skinny dipping for the first time!") from the second wave. Thankfully, no one got hurt from the two merciless waves that attacked us (no other huge waves after those two, our luck).

We ate lunch at a nearby Denny's & then headed home to try & salvage any equipment we could. John brought two DSLRs, one point & shoot, & four lenses. He ended up losing one DSLR, the point & shoot, & three lenses, totaling a loss of $10,000! Ironically, our little tsunami took out his Japanese camera of all cameras. John also said that it was his first time experiencing a true fight or flight response with the first wave. Vinh & I had never seen someone disappear so quick! The three of us ended up hanging out at Vinh's place for the remainder of the evening with John introducing us to 9gag.com. Vinh wrote a $2,000 check to help John recover some of the loss since we felt bad about the whole thing & he really appreciated it. At 7:30pm, we drove our new friend back to the airport & said our goodbyes for now!

As we got home from the airport, I opened up my Photoshop & created the image below for John. It pretty much summed up our day & represented our new found time-consuming distraction :)

John's response: "omg you two are awesome"

I awoke to the sweetest email from John saying he did not regret anything from yesterday's session. He also included the seven photos above as previews! John stated "It's nuts; you two are so natural in front of the camera that come wedding day....your shots are going to be legendary!" Even though we have lost quite a bit yesterday, we've gained an amazing relationship with not only our photographer, but a friend that felt like we've known each other forever (despite meeting just yesterday). We cannot wait for what John dishes up for the rest of the engagement session & for our wedding. All we know is that it will be epic! Also, now we're not letting John near the ocean with his whole bag of equipment for our wedding in August :P

EDiT; You can see all the carnage from the day in John's photo album ;)
