CMYE: Yelp Helps 2013

Yes, it's a Yelp sort of week last week, haha. Vinh & I wanted to participate in the Yelp Helps event going on throughout the month of January. First, because we haven't volunteered in ages & second, because we want in on the Good Karma Ball in February. So where did we volunteer exactly? At the Guadalupe Heritage Rose Garden on January 19 from 8:30AM-11:30AM (with frost on the ground to begin with!).

Yelp Helps 2013

Before & after of our first rose pruning

I'll be the first to tell you that I suck majorly at gardening & basically the same goes for Vinh. So we figured why not try volunteering at a rose garden & try to learn something to get somewhat of a green thumb?! We arrived a little early & met Marianne (she's a lead volunteer for 15+ years for the garden now). For the first hour of volunteering, Marianne & Mike (another lead volunteer) taught us newbies how to prune properly. Then the gave us our tools & set us free with a tarpe to prune the garden away! You can see our first pruning success above called the National Trust. Anyhoo, Marianne said we did an excellent job with our first pruning gig, which was a huge compliment for us since she's been doing it for over a decade! *dances* We ended up pruning about 3-4 rose bushes before our volunteer stint ended.

With our tools, haha!

Let's just say that I've learning that pruning is more than just chopping away the bush (though it still was mostly that, haha), but that it's an art to create more airspace for the bush to grow & bloom. Vinh & I will be returning to the garden when the roses begin to bloom to see how our little pruned rose bushes look in full bloom. If it looks bad, it wasn't us ;)

Thanks Yelp & GoVoluntr for finding us a rather fun volunteer opportunity last Saturday morning!

  1. How fun! I would like to learn how to prune stuff. I'm not very good at gardening, but I love the end result!

Luckily James knows these tricks when it comes to pruning trees/or cutting back for winter! I will leave all that work to him :)

Congrats on the compliment! I am sure that felt great for first timers :)
